Year 6 World War II Project

Over the course of five days, Year 6 pupils had the opportunity to take part in a project (funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund) all about World War II. Led by local historians Peter and Neil, the children learnt all about what life was like for people living in Heaton during the war. The project began with a trip to Heaton Cemetery where they found the Commonwealth graves of local servicemen. It also included a trip to the Victoria Tunnels where they met Basil, who was an evacuee during the war. The children visited Guildford Place (a street near to school) to find out about what happened to do during an air raid. Other activities included a Home Guard re-enactment, the use of animation apps and a green screen to make their own WWII photographs, and a visit from a local artist (Emma Holliday) who showed the children how to make a WWII collage picture.
