As part of their Local History Study, Year 6 visited the Victoria Tunnels in the Ouseburn. The trip included two parts: a classroom workshop and a guided tour through the tunnels.
In the classroom workshop, the children were able to experience what life was like for a child living in Heaton and Byker during WWII. An air-raid warden taught the children about: rationing, finding safety during the air-raids, school-life and life during the Blitz. Take a look at the photographs which show the children handling memorabilia from this time.
The children were taken on a guided tour of the underground tunnels which were used as a place of safety from the bombing of WWII air-raids. You can see from the photographs below, the children found out that often families had to stay down in the tunnels for a very long time experiencing cramped and unhygienic conditions!
