Year 3: Squash at the Northumberland Club

Over the past few weeks, Year 3 have had the exciting opportunity to develop their skills in squash, a fast-paced and energetic sport. The class was divided into smaller groups, allowing each child to receive focused coaching and plenty of time on the court. Each group has participated in two sessions so far, with two more planned after Christmas. During the sessions, the children have been introduced to key squash skills, such as how to grip the racket correctly, developing forehand and backhand strokes, and practising ball control. They have worked on hitting the ball accurately, aiming for specific areas on the court, and improving their agility and footwork to move quickly and confidently during play. The sessions have also focused on spatial awareness and basic game strategy, helping the children learn how to anticipate their opponent’s shots and position themselves effectively. Through fun drills and friendly matches, they have also developed teamwork, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. In addition to the physical benefits, these squash lessons have boosted the children’s confidence, coordination, and enthusiasm for trying new activities. They are already looking forward to their next sessions in the New Year, eager to refine their skills and continue enjoying this exciting sport.
