Year 3 – Science – Soils

In our science unit this term, children have been learning all about rocks, soils, and fossils. In today’s lesson, children focused on how rocks turn into soul. They focused on how weathering can quicken this procedure and learned how rocks can expand during the day and contract during the night, and how this process of temperature change can have an impact on the structural integrity of the rock. Cracks are then created that allow further weathering. When does rock become soil? Rock starts becoming soil the moment it is exposed to the environment. But it’s a long transformation process from exposed rock to a mature soil. Depending on the nature of the rock and other factors in its surroundings, that time period can range between tens to tens of thousands of years!
