Year 3 – Science – Rocks, Soils, and Fossils

In science (chemistry strand), children have been learning all about rocks. Children have had the chance to look at different types of rocks and explore their colour, texture, and weight. We have looked at rocks and their uses and discussed where we might see different types of rock in the real world. Children learnt that slate is an impermeable rock and can be used for roof tiles, where marble could be used for statues, as well as in the home for kitchen bench tops or bathroom units.

In today’s lesson, we focused on the durability and permeability of six types of rock. Children gave a score from one to five for two tests that focused on scratching the surface of the rock (we used a screw) and a pressure test (we used a 1kg weight) which we then dropped onto the rock that we were testing. We then added water droplets to the surface of each rock to see if it was permeable or impermeable.
