Year 3 – Rocks, soils, and fossils

Rocks, Soils, and Fossils:

Year 3 children have now finished their first science chemistry unit for the year. Children learned all about rocks, soils, and fossils over a three week period using our whole school block curriculum approach.

Pupils were taught to:

  1. compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties (we looked at igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic)

  2. describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock

  3. recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter

In addition to these objectives, children worked scientifically by: observing rocks and exploring how and why they might have changed over time; identification and classification of rocks according to whether they have grains or crystals, and whether they have fossils in them. Pupils also looked at different soils and and looked at the permeability of different soils., whilst also focusing on the soil formation process.
