Science Adventure: Exploring the Fascinating World of Rocks, Soils, and Fossils!
Our Year 3 pupils have embarked on an exciting scientific journey this term, delving into the fascinating world of rocks, soils, and fossils. It’s been a hands-on experience, sparking curiosity and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders beneath our feet.
The children began their adventure by exploring a diverse collection of rocks. From the shimmering allure of fool’s gold to the smooth elegance of marble and the volcanic mystery of obsidian, each rock offered a new story waiting to be uncovered. Holding these natural treasures in their hands, pupils observed and discussed the unique properties of each one, like the durability of granite and the fine texture of pumice. Pupils compared colours, textures, and weights, uncovering the secrets that make each rock unique.
The exploration didn’t stop there! Our young scientists then turned their attention to the concept of permeability. They learnt how some rocks allow water to pass through them, while others do not, a characteristic that’s crucial in determining their use in everyday life. Focusing on slate, the children discovered why this rock is so often used in building homes. Its impermeable nature makes it perfect for roofs, keeping out the rain and protecting our homes from the elements.
Our Year 3 pupils have worked incredibly hard and shown great enthusiasm. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity blossom as they’ve explored the properties of rocks and begun to understand the vital roles these materials play in our daily lives. We’re looking forward to continuing this journey as we delve into the next stages of our study, exploring soils and the intriguing world of fossils.
