Year 1 – Science – Everyday Materials

Year 1 have been learning about materials and their properties in their science lessons. The children first sorted materials into different groups, they decided whether they were hard, soft, bendy or stiff.

During continuous provision, children then weighed different materials and discussed which materials were heavy and why.

Pupils then completed an investigation to see which material would be best to make an umbrella. Children tested paper, fabric, tin foil and cling film. They found that tin foil or cling film would be best to make the umbrella as they were waterproof.
