Year 1 – Maths – Addition

This week in maths, Year 1 have been using the part part whole model to help with addition. Children first began by splitting a piece of “cheese” into different parts. Pupils tried to split it in as many different ways as they could, firstly they split it into 2 equal parts and then into unequal parts. We discussed that even though the parts were different sizes the whole remained the same.

Year 1 then moved on to look at the part part whole model. Children were given a number and used counters to split this number up into 2 parts. Pupils were then able to write their answers in their part part whole model.
