Year 1 – History – Changes within living memory

This week Year 1 have been learning all about changes within living memory. They have looked at what life was like when their grandparents were young.

Firstly, children looked at how schools have changed. They found out that children used to use ink and a quill to write and the teacher often used chalk and a blackboard. Whereas now children use pencils and pens and teachers teach using a smart board or a white board. The children then sorted pictures into ‘Now’ and ‘In the past’ and discussed the changes.

Then, pupils moved on to look at how toys have changed. Children found out that lots of toys that were made in the past were wooden and did not have batteries like they do now. They then had the opportunity to play with some old toys.
