Year 1 – D&T – Making Windmills

In D&T this week, Year 1 have been designing and making their own windmills. We started by looking at different types of windmills and learned that windmills can be used to grind grain into flour, to produce electricity or to pump water. Children then learned that each windmill has three main parts – the structure, the axle and the sails. Pupils then designed their own windmill and thought about what they would use to create it. They then used paper cups, paper straws and a sail templates to create their own windmill by attaching all of the parts together. The children then tested them out, firstly by blowing on them and then in the wind outside.
