This week, Robbie from the KATS (Kids action through science) team at Newcastle University visited our school to dive into the fascinating world of habitats and birds native to the UK. Children’s learned all about birds and habitats and looked at the following:
Bird Classification: The children began by categorising birds based on their unique features such as beaks, talons, and legs. They learned how these adaptations help birds thrive in their environments.
Exploring UK Birds: Next, Robbie introduced the children to various bird species found across the United Kingdom. They discovered where these birds live, what they eat, and how they contribute to our ecosystem.
Birdhouse Building and Painting: To cap off their learning experience, the children had the exciting opportunity to construct and decorate their own birdhouses. They applied their knowledge of bird habitats to create comfortable and attractive homes for feathered friends.
Highlights and Achievements
Engaging Hands-On Learning: The children actively participated in activities that promoted understanding of bird diversity and habitat conservation.
Creativity Unleashed: Building and painting birdhouses allowed the children to express their creativity while reinforcing their understanding of birds’ needs.
Team Collaboration: Throughout the sessions, teamwork and collaboration were emphasised, fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment.
Robbie’s visit from Newcastle University enriched our pupils understanding of local bird species and their habitats. The hands-on activities not only deepened their knowledge but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards wildlife conservation. The children left inspired and eager to continue exploring the natural world around them.
